New Year's Eve is the biggest party night of the year, and there's a stellar list of celebrations to choose from in the Detroit area. Detroiters know how to usher in the new year, whether it's a concert, a huge bash, or a family-friendly event that includes the "D" drop. Here's a list of some of the best ways to ring in 2018 in the Detroit area. Ticket prices quoted are regular prices; if you buy them early you could get discounts, which will be shown on the websites.

    NYE Bleuout 2018

    The big New Year's Eve bash starts at Bleu Detroit at 9 p.m. and goes on literally all night; the place doesn't close until 4 a.m. On the bill are Eran Hersh, Lazzlo, Robbie Rio, Klees, Elemnt, JD Raveman, and Hypnotic. Tickets range from $10 to $50.

    Detroit Princess Riverboat: Rock the Boat

    There's no more iconic way to ring in the new year in Detroit than with a Motown dinner cruise on the Detroit Princess Riverboat. You'll be treated to a dinner buffet, great Motown music, dancing, and a cash bar. And at midnight there will be a Champagne toast to the new year and old friends. You can board from 7 to 10 p.m., and you'll be cruising from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The party's over at 2 a.m., the end of a memorable night. This is an over-21 event, and tickets are $75 apiece.

    Detroit Symphony Orchestra: New Year's Eve

    The Detroit Symphony's New Year's Eve concert is all Michael Jackson, all the time. The symphony will celebrate his beginnings as a child with Jackson 5 to his mega-hits like "I'll Be There," "Thriller," and "Beat It," among many other signature Jackson songs. The doors at Orchestra Hall open at 8 p.m. to get the party started, and the concert is from 10 p.m. to midnight. You can party on until 2 a.m. after the music is over. Packages range from $125 to $500 per person, depending on what's included and your concert seat.

    The Fillmore Theatre: Resolution Ball

    The Resolution Ball is one of the largest in the Midwest and draws a crowd of mainly young professionals in their 20s and 30s. Entertainment includes high-wire acrobats and roving illusionists, DJs, and dancers. The ball also features a midnight buffet with pizza, sliders, and Coneys; a Champagne toast; a balloon drop; a confetti storm; and six big screens tuned to Times Square.  You should dress up for this one: New Year's Eve glam or black tie, whichever you prefer. Tickets are $135 and $175, depending on how many hours you want to be at the party. You can show up at 8 or 9:30 p.m., depending on your package.

Motor City New Year's Eve: The Drop

The “D” is lowered at midnight in Beacon Park in downtown Detroit at this free and family-friendly celebration. The festival, expected to draw thousands,  includes local entertainment on two stages, fire pits, and horse-drawn carriage rides. Kids will enjoy their own mini drop earlier in the evening, along with games and activities. Food is available from a host of local restaurants, vendors, and food trucks. This party starts at 4 p.m. and lasts until 1 a.m. 

Or do this up brown in at the Motown Countdown in the Grand Celebration Party Pavilion, just beneath the "D" Drop. Its huge dance floor, fully stocked bar, and live music on the main stage will keep you entertained all night in full view of the party outside, and you'll have a ringside seat for the drop at midnight. The Motown Countdown starts at 8 p.m. and rocks until 1 a.m. Tickets are $135 apiece.

New Year's Eve at the David Whitney Building

Welcome the new year in the spectacular surroundings of Detroit's iconic David Whitney Building. There will be music and dancing and a Champagne toast and balloon drop at midnight in the building's stunning atrium. An open bar and good eats from Epicurean Catering will keep you happy all night. You'll find live entertainment at the WXYZ Lounge with DJ Vince Patricola supplying the patter and a bonfire to gather ?around outside. One hundred bucks get you a ticket to this sure-to-be memorable event that lasts from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
