Window signs for the Vancouver-based retailer appeared Tuesday in a currently vacant storefront at 1459 Woodward, the former location of a Kit + Ace store that closed this spring. The signs say Lululemon will open in the fall.
Started in 1998 and now a publicly trade company, Lululemon helped to popularize the high-end yoga pants trend of recent years. It operates a handful of retail stores in Michigan, including in downtown Birmingham, Somerset Collection and at Twelve Oaks Mall.
A Lululemon representative said the Detroit store will open in late September and declined further comment.
Lululemon is the latest hot national clothing and retail brand to open shop along Woodward in the city's downtown. Other recent arrivals include Under Armour sportswear, a Nike store, eyewear shop Warby Parker and men's retailer Bonobos.
The former Kit + Ace store, known for women's and men's "athleisure" attire, closed in April when that retailer announced it would shutter all of its U.S. stores. Kit + Ace was started by the wife and son of Lululemon founder Chip Wilson.
The store's 3,000-square-foot space is in a building owned or controlled by Dan Gilbert's Bedrock Detroit real estate firm.
