6 Michigan communities among '100 Safest in America' By: Brandon Champion

Six Michigan communities are among the safest in America, according to a report released on Monday, April 3.

SafeWise, a home security and safety brand, compiled its fourth annual report of the 100 Safest Cities in America by analyzing the most recent complete FBI crime data from 2015. All of the cities have a minimum population of 10,000 people.

Michigan has five townships and one city on the list ranked between No.20 and No.88. Communities included on the list include Oakland Township (20), Grosse Ill Township (26), Flushing Township (63), Hamburg Township (65), Brandon Township (69) and South Lyon (88).

Lewisboro in northeast New York was named the safest city in America for the second year in a row.

No.20 Oakland Township

Oakland Charter Township did not appear on the list in 2016, but the community located north of Detroit is the highest rated in Michigan for safety.  According to the report, the community of more than 19,000 has just .31 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 3 property crimes per 1,000 people/

The Oakland Township Police Department, Fire Prevention Coordinator Andrew Linn and Oakland Township's Safety Paths and Trails Committee are all credited in the report.

No. 26 Grosse Ill Township

Grosse Ille Township, an island community outside of Detroit, is the 26th safest city in America for the second year in a row. It has a population of more than 10,000 but just .10 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 3.4 property crimes per 1,000 people.

"Thanks to low crime rates, there aren't many threats beyond the local coyotes," the report reads. "To keep both its human and four-legged residents safe, Grosse Ile Township has an active animal control department that teaches about wildlife safety and best pet practices."

No. 63 Flushing Township

Flushing Township, located northwest of Flint, moves up from its rank as the 73rd safest community in 2016. The community of more than 10,000 has just .58 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 3.8 property crimes per 1,000 people.

"The town works hard to maintain its safety record and historic vistas by keeping the police force staffed with the best and brightest, and by hosting regular hazardous waste disposal days to ensure no one sullies the land, "the report reads.

No. 65 Hamburg Township

Livingston County's Hamburg Township ranks just behind Flushing Township at No.65. It was ranked 50th in 2016. The community of more than 21,800 has just .50 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 3.9 property crimes per 1,000 people.

"Because Hamburg has so much natural landscape for its residents to explore, the police officers have mountain bikes, a Polaris utility vehicle, and a police boat so they can patrol all the city's territory and make sure citizens stay safe no matter where they are or what they're doing," the report reads.

No.69 Brandon Township

Oakland County's Brandon Township was not ranked on the 2016 list. The community of more than 15,600 people has just .96 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 3.6 property crimes per 1,000 people. SafeWise praised its OakAlert System and the Oakland County Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area.

"It seems like Brandon Township, Michigan, has everything covered, "the report reads.

No. 88 South Lyon

The Metro Detroit community of South Lyon is the only Michigan city on the list. It was ranked No. 118 in 2016. The city of more than 11,800 people has just .85 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 4.1 property crimes per 1,000 people.

The South Lyon Police Department is credited for its free firearm storage and the recreation department is credited for concentrating on the health and wellness of South Lyon residents by maintaining the Huron Valley Rail Trail.

"The diversity of community enrichment activities and safety initiatives makes South Lyon one of the best and safest places to live in America, "the report reads.
